Diving In Gili Islands

Other activities include kite surfing, glass-bottom boat trips, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, and surfing. Activities include walking and cycling around the island, sunbathing, and swimming, snorkeling and diving, as well as yoga and meditation, and relaxing massages and body treatments. Also, don’t forget to have a swing at one of the many swings around Gili Air. Like all the Gilis, the best swimming beaches are on the east coast, and most development runs along the beaches here down to the south. There is a good variety of restaurants and beachside cafes on the island, offering everything from traditional Indonesian dishes to up-market international fare.
Be careful not to touch any of these items, as they can easily cut you underwater. All that remains of the Meno Bounty wreck is a 30m long platform which has become the home to many fish species. It used to be a jetty for the bounty cruise ship until around 15 years ago when a stormy night broke it in half and sunk it beneath the waves. The length of time and persuasive currents means the wreck is virtually hard to distinguish from the surrounding reef. The wreck is slowly breaking apart due to the currents, and divers are therefore not allowed to swim underneath the wreck. Apart from the majestic manta, this dive site gives you the opportunity to enjoy seeing masses of staghorn coral with small fishes hiding within.

Moreover, you can literally go swimming and snorkeling off the shore from anywhere in Gili! If you didn’t bring your ownsnorkeling gear, it’s easy to rent a mask, flippers, and a snorkel at any of the dive shops in town or even from locals on the beach. Snorkeling is one of the top things to do on Gili Trawangan, rivaling some of the best snorkeling spots in Southeast Asia. And to be honest, you can’t visit the Gili islands without getting a close-up look at the all colorful treasures beneath the water.
We work hard to make sure that all our students and divers leave Indonesia with a passion to continue diving. Our goal is to provide you with the best scuba diving and teaching available in the Gilis. Weather conditions vary from place to place and it is important to check what time of year is best when you book to dive in a specific location. In general, for anywherewest of Komodo, try for May to September. Bali is the most well-known destination in Indonesia, for both scuba divers and non.

Since then, I have traveled extensively throughout the Pacific region but fell particularly in love with Indonesia. But when I planted my feet in Bali for the first time in 2009, it was love at first sight. From the vast horizon of lush green rice paddies, stunning turquoise blue ocean to the mind-blowing cliffside coastlines, Bali was the ultimate paradise I had always dreamed of. An adventurous world-wandering couple with a passion for street food, adrenaline inducing activities and adventure. It was our love for travel, photography, and sharing our adventures that inspired us to create this website.
There are also sites around Gili Air where you can see mandarin fish spawning at dusk, which can make for the perfect start to a night dive. Diving in Komodo National Park in Indonesia, surrounded by massive Manta Rays, padi divemaster gili trawangan pelagic fish hunting and thousands of different colorful tropical fish is still some of the best diving I have ever done. To reach Komodo National Park most trips depart from Labuan Bajo on the Island of Flores.
These two dive sites are next to one another and dive guides sometimes combine a bit of both. A gentle sandy slope running parallel to the shore, there are large and small bommies plus a large coral mound. Unlike other well-known scuba spots in Southeast Asia, it’s a year-round experience with rewarding diving . Seasonal highlights include the occasional whale shark and vast schools of mind-blowing bumphead parrotfish. The area has spectacular staghorn coral with bommies with hard and soft coral.

Peacock mantis shrimps are carnivores, therefore their punch is often used to break a crabs outer shell in order to kill then eat it. Scuba diving in Gili Trawangan, most commonly known as ‘Gili T’, is very popular for numerous reasons. Indonesia is little known to divers out there that Indonesia is actually one of the world’s best scuba destination even though it has many beautiful diving spots.
You will be able to swim through the captain’s cabin, check out the anchor on the outside, see the massive cargo space, and ship toilets. The ship is slowly transforming from a massive hunk of metal into an artificial reef, with every passing month attracting more sea creatures. This is one of the most popular sites at Gili T because of the amount of megafauna that aggregates here. The unique topography of the area attracts the animals in large numbers. The dive site has a flat sandy bottom which transitions into deeper canyons that run parallel to the shore.

So long as you aren’t venturing here expecting to experience the real Indonesia there’s plenty of island charm here. The only thing you will make time for at some point is a trip South of the island for one of the most stunning sunsets in Asia. Boasting only horse-drawn carts and bicycles for transportation due to a local ban on motor vehicles, Gili T is a peaceful and pollution free alternative to congested Bali.
If you need help for your accommodation, our partner, Anema resort and villa, will provide special room rates for you. Motorized vehicles are not permitted on the island so during your stay you have three choices; you can walk, ride a bike, or take a horse-drawncart. Many fast boat operations are running directly between Bali and Gili Trawangan. You’ll either leave from Serangan or Padang Bai, depending on the area of Bali you are coming from.
If someone announces themselves as one then do ensure you are provided with appropriate identification. The affected area should then be immersed in hot water for at least 20 minutes. If you want to sleep in a hotel/villa in front of the beach, you might want to avoid an area near a port because the sea water there is very oily. Demand often outstrips supply, so prices tend to be noticeably higher than on Bali or Lombok.

A daily snorkelling programme usually involves a 10AM departure and 4PM return, and includes three or four spots around the three islands and a 2 hr lunch break. The cost ranges from Rp 60, ,000 depending on the shop and your negotiating skills. The quoted price normally includes the mask and snorkel but Rp 10,000 may be charged for the fins. Gili Trawangan has the most dive operators, but PADI and SSI licensed dive operators exist on all three islands.
For the fitness fanatic, triathlon loving people out there looking for a unique way of pushing their bodies to the brim then the Gili Trawangan Triathlon could be for you. Some of the highlights were the private pool, sunken living room complete with a cinema-sized, Netflix primed television and a sound system to get the party started. We had the pleasure of staying in the latest treehouse called Gili Loft.
